Jubilation by two friends at Agona Nyakrom over the victory of President John Mahama in the presidential election turned into tragedy when one stabbed his friend to death.

Kobina Ishmaila, an 18-year-old labourer, and Kofi Ofori were making merry when Ofori stabbed Ishmaila to death.

Deputy Superintendent of Police Joseph Ackah, the Agona Nyakrom District Police Commander, told the GNA on Monday that after the announcement of the presidential result, misunderstanding arose between the suspect, who was drank, and the deceased.

He said the suspect ran to his nearby house, picked a knife and stabbed the deceased on the chest and who died on his way to Agona Swedru Government Hospital.

The suspected has been placed in police custody pending police investigations.

The District Police Commander warned supporters of political parties to desist from taking excessive alcohol to prevent them from committing crimes.

DSP Ackah said the police would deal with anybody who would take the law into his or her hands and added that with the election over what is needed is for the people to come together as one people to push the nation forward.

Jubilant stabs to death

A 17-year-old unemployed, Ayaoba Nyaaba, who was celebrating the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) victory in last Friday’s polls died instantly on Sunday when a tricycle he was seated on with two others somersaulted.

The incident happened at Baakoniaba, a suburb of Sunyani at the weekend. The corpse has been deposited at the mortuary pending autopsy.

The rider, Felix Abodoo was treated for his injuries at the Sunyani Government Hospital. He is in police custody awaiting prosecution for riding without a licence, careless and inconsiderate ridding. The second passenger is still on admissions at the hospital.

Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Teddy Damptey Brown, Deputy Brong-Ahafo Regional Commander of Motor Traffic and Transport Unit, (MTTU) told the Ghana News Agency in Sunyani, that the incident happened in the midst of a group of NDC supporters, who were celebrating with motor bikes, tricycles and cars.

He pointed out that most of the riders using the tricycles had no licences as well as insurance coverage.

ASP Brown advised activists, supporters and sympathisers of the NDC, especially drivers and riders, to exercise restraint in their jubilation so that they do not put the public at risk.
